Successful “Halloween” Horse-racing Event Raises Over £600

News - 2017 (Apr) News - 2017 (May)

We held a most enjoyable evening of horse-racing where bets of £0.50 could be placed on horses in pre-filmed races.  Our thanks to Rotary in Sutton-in-Ashfield for supplying a great team and all the equipment required for the event.  An excellent Pie and Mash or Vegetarian stir fry supper was included in the ticket price of £5 and our thanks to John Semmons of the Volunteer Bureau for cooking for us.

With a licensed bar  it was fairly painless to lose to the Tote!  Well done Dennis Taylor for all the hard work in organising the event and arranging for the hall to be decorated so spookily!

… And of course - a huge thanks to local businesses who helped sponsor individual races.

Cheque For £1000 Presented For “Sand Dam in Africa” Project

News - 2017 (June) News - 2017 (July)

Earlier in the month Glyn, our president, presented a cheque to Adrian Perkins who is the president of Church Wilne Rotary Club.  We raised the money at a film night, which we held back in February 2017 to raise money for our international work.

The cheque was a donation towards a sand dam in Africa. Sand dams are a way of harvesting water, providing a clean local water supply for domestic and farming use. The dam fills with sand which holds up to 40% of its volume as water. It is an inexpensive, low tech way to harvest water.

Adrian is well on the way to raising many thousands of pounds for the project.  He hopes to raise sufficient money to get a matching grant from our District and Rotary International to then be able to afford the Civil Engineering survey work and purchase the materials required to establish the sand dam.

In 2015 Adrian spent a week in Africa as a volunteer helping local people with construction of such a dam.  Good luck, Adrian!
